In April 2017, I organized an evening fundraiser and educational event for the community of Green Bay. This event took place at the Art Garage and was supported by numerous local organizations, a small grant from Thrivent Financial, and plenty of family and friends.
Through art, photography, and storytelling, this evening focused on sharing the stories of refugees stuck in Greece during the years 2015-2017 and partnered with Voices of Refugees Project to highlight personal narratives and photographs. The event featured appetizers, a cash bar, silent auction and a brief presentation featuring videos from refugees and the reading of a letter from a 15 year-old refugee stuck in Ritsona.
The event raised over $2,000 dollars that went directly to educational programming for children and youth at Ritsona refugee camp. Funds were used for books, art supplies and funding technology to keep teens connected to online education opportunities.
We experienced such success that the fundraiser in Green Bay that we brought it to Boston, MA in July 2017 to repeat the mission: raising funds for critical education programs at Ritsona. Again, we were successful. The Boston From Ritsona with Love event raised over $4,000.
Again the event included beautiful photographs and interviews of refugee residents at Ritsona. It also included testimonials from four former volunteers who were able to travel to Boston to attend the event.
